North Charleston Intermodal Transportation Center Breaks Ground
On Thursday, Aug. 24, officials in North Charleston celebrated the groundbreaking of the North Charleston Intermodal Transportation Center. The Davis & Floyd team was thrilled to be there to witness this monumental event. Davis & Floyd has provided architectural and engineering services for the 15,500-square-foot, one-story passenger intermodal center that will be occupied by Amtrak, intercity bus service, and CARTA.
For this project, we’ve worked closely with local, federal, and private stakeholders to ensure needs were identified and conflicts resolved in a timely manner. Our team also engaged the surrounding Liberty Hill community to address concerns related to the project and incorporate the community’s rich history into the design.
Davis & Floyd led the civil design, which required realignment of existing roadways and addition of busways, loading areas, and parking lots to ensure safe access for large trucks and buses as well as taxis, passenger cars, bicycles, and pedestrians. Throughout this process, our design team worked closely with local businesses and city planning staff to ensure their needs and requirements were met.
The final design was completed in January 2017 and phased construction is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2018. The new facility will be a more welcoming site for visitors to the area and the Davis & Floyd team is proud to be a part of this effort!
