Fitted with a one-of-a-kind amphitheater and interactive fountain, North Charleston Riverfront Park along the Cooper River opened to the public on July 4, 2005 and draws patrons to community events year-round. Davis & Floyd served as the park’s design engineer, incorporating sustainable development practices. Two years later, we completed the Greater Charleston Naval Base Memorial, located within Riverfront Park, which includes a pavilion, water feature with a reflection pool and pedestrian bridges, sculptures, and landscaping. Riverfront Park was impacted by Hurricane Matthew in October 2016 and Tropical Storm Irma in September 2017. The City of North Charleston retained us to evaluate the damage that occurred during these storms and make recommendations for any needed repairs.
Performed a structural condition assessment of the portions of the existing timber boardwalk and fishing pier that were submerged during the storms and made recommendations for structural repairs
Performed an assessment of the damaged electrical system, originally designed by others, and made recommendations to replace the existing system with a new electrical system utilizing flood-resistant design
Surveyed the extent of erosion that had occurred along the shoreline and made recommendations for repairs and stabilization
Provided construction cost estimates for the repairs and assisted the City in preparing applications for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) reimbursement for the storm-related repairs
Preparing the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) permitting application for the repairs and will provide the final design of the repairs, construction document preparation, bidding assistance, and contract administration services during construction
Portions of the timber fishing pier and timber boardwalk were submerged during the storms
Electrical lighting system on the pier and boardwalk was severely damaged and portions of the shoreline experienced erosion during the storms
A gem on the South Carolina coast, North Charleston Riverfront Park continues to provide the community with access to the Cooper River, serene vistas, and special events.
