Michael Horton to Participate in Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce Ask the Expert Event

Davis & Floyd Chief Engineering Officer Michael Horton, PE, CFM will participate in an “Ask the Expert” event hosted by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. He will join Laura Cabiness, PE, director of public service for the City of Charleston, to discuss the Master Drainage Plan and future drainage plans for the Charleston area.

The event will be held Feb. 21, 2018, 11:30 a.m., at the Charleston Maritime Center.

Davis & Floyd Joins the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporation

Davis & Floyd Hosts Walking Tour of Market Street Drainage Improvement Project

Davis & Floyd, Inc. partnered with the Urban Land Institute South Carolina (ULI SC) to host a walking tour of the City of Charleston’s Market Street Drainage Improvement Project. ULI currently has an Urban Resilience Program that “seeks to enhance community resilience with a focus on the built environment, real estate markets, and land use policy sector” and this tour was initiated to showcase local projects making Charleston more resilient. This tour provided the unique opportunity for participants to hear from Davis & Floyd professionals as they described the project in detail.

With approximately 4 million visitors each year, Charleston’s Market Street corridor is known for its beauty and rich history, but it’s also notorious for its frequent flooding. Davis & Floyd currently is working with the City of Charleston on the development of construction documents for the third and final phase of the Market Street Drainage Improvement Project. In 1995, the City of Charleston initiated the project, which continued the City’s previous ambition to develop deep conveyance (tunnel) drainage solutions for repetitive flooding issues within the peninsula. The project was split into three divisions. Division I involved upgrading the existing stormwater pump station near the South Carolina Aquarium to accommodate the additional flows from the Market Street drainage area. The second phase, Division II, included the design and construction of a 9-foot-diameter tunnel approximately 140 feet beneath Concord Street and Market Street connecting the Market Street drainage area to the pump station.

Division III, which currently is being designed by Davis & Floyd, includes design of the near-surface stormwater collection system. Construction of this system will require demolition of Market Street’s pavement sidewalks and the City of Charleston recognized this as an opportunity to enhance the corridor’s streetscape. Streetscape design elements, including expanded sidewalks, multiuse lanes, new landscaped areas, and undergrounding of overhead utilities, are being incorporated into the project to improve the aesthetics and pedestrian flow along the corridor.
