Objectives

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) needed to widen an 8-mile stretch of highway considered to be one of the nation’s most dangerous 2-lane roads. Davis & Floyd was selected to design and build a safer roadway while preserving the ACE Basin.

Scope

Widened the highway

Improved drainage

Added more visible street signage

Built innovative “tear drop” interchange that utilizes a roundabout and flyover

An environmentally sensitive area that required careful planning to minimize impacts on wildlife

Construction took place in a high-traffic area

Outcome

A successful design-build project that was completed 3 months ahead of schedule and more than $17 million under budgeted cost.
