Objectives

City of Charleston contracted Davis & Floyd to design the Lower King Street Streetscape. Serving as Charleston’s retail center since the 1700s, King Street is one of the original streets and is surrounded by historic buildings. Streetscape improvements were important for economic growth.

Scope

Provided surveying, engineering, permitting, and construction inspection services

Designed the project so that construction included relocating all above-ground utilities underground; replacing concrete sidewalks with new bluestone sidewalks; installing brick driveways and crosswalks; planting trees; installing street lamps; making minor drainage improvements; repaving the street; installing granite curbs; removing existing trolley tracks; and adding handicap accessible ramps

Provided construction management and inspection services for the water line replacement and sewer rehabilitation

Challenges

Coordinating and collaborating with King Street retailers

Outcome

Davis & Floyd designed the new streetscape to highlight King Street as a major destination for tourists, locals, and College of Charleston students, while maintaining its historic ambiance.
