Objectives

North Charleston Sewer District Felix C. Davis WWTP was a 27-MGD conventional secondary wastewater treatment plant that needed to be upgraded and expanded for better efficiency and future growth.

2010 American Council of Engineering Companies of South Carolina (ACEC-SC) Palmetto Award Finalist and Engineering Excellence Award

Scope

Optimized design parameters through computer modeling; provided automated dissolved oxygen control system that employed high efficiency equipment such as single stage-blowers; used V-port ball valves; and implemented luminescent dissolved oxygen probes to improve energy efficiency

Upgraded the plant to prepare for growth in the services area

Expanded capacity to 32 MGD

Improved performance and reliability of plant

Increased energy efficiency to reduce operating costs

Challenges

Used new technologies to produce a highly-efficient WWTP

Outcome

Upgraded the WWTP for future growth in the North Charleston area

Implemented state-of-the-art, energy-efficient, environmentally-sustainable technologies to improve the WWTP

Project was completed a month ahead of schedule and approximately $1 million under budget
