Objectives

Charleston County sought to reduce traffic congestion that was a byproduct of The Boeing Company’s 787 Dreamliner Assembly Plant project and the Charleston International Airport. Davis & Floyd was engaged to perform a traffic study of the area and develop concept plans and cost estimates for roadway improvements.

Scope

Prepared a traffic model that included over 30 intersections around the Charleston International Airport

Analyzed existing and future traffic conditions

Proposed multiple recommendations to accommodate and improve traffic flow around the Charleston International Airport

Challenges

Significant traffic during peak travel time required creative design to accommodate vehicles traveling in all directions

Stakeholder expectations and agendas needed to be managed effectively

Outcome

A number of recommendations that will improve vehicle congestion and reconfigure roadways in an effort to prepare for future traffic and expansion.
