Objectives

Davis & Floyd is providing program management as well as full architectural and engineering design services for the 15,500-square-foot, one-story Intermodal Center that will be occupied by Amtrak, Southeastern Stages regional bus service, and CARTA.

Scope

Designed a new building, parking lot, and train platform on the existing Amtrak train station site

Developed a facility to consolidate various modes of transportation at one location to improve interconnectivity, replacing the existing Amtrak passenger terminal and Southeastern Stages bus station

Provided short- and long-term parking for passengers

Included CARTA office space, community meeting room, and historic display room

Led the civil design, which required realignment of existing roadways and addition of busways, loading areas, and parking lots to ensure safe access for large trucks and buses as well as taxis, passenger cars, bicycles, and pedestrians

Worked closely with local, federal, and private stakeholders to ensure needs were identified and conflicts resolved in a timely manner

Engaged the surrounding Liberty Hill community to address concerns related to the project and incorporate the community’s rich history into the design

Challenges

Designing the new facilities so that they can be constructed while the existing train station remains fully operational

Outcome

The new Intermodal Center will provide an impressive gateway to the Charleston region and link Amtrak passenger trains, Southeastern Stages regional buses, and local bus service.
