Davis & Floyd, Inc. announced today that Ryan Hertzfeld recently earned his Professional Landscape Architect (PLA) certification. This certification is regulated by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).

The certification process includes obtaining an undergraduate degree in Landscape Architecture, a four-part rigorous licensing exam, and an apprenticeship. Once earned, South Carolina state law requires licensees to complete continuing education hours in order to maintain their license.

“We are proud of Ryan for completing the process and earning his PLA certification,” said Stephen Davis, president and CEO of Davis & Floyd. “Ryan is focused on the visual communications side of landscape architecture. He works closely with our team to incorporate cutting-edge technology using 3D VR modeling to help convey designs to clients. We are excited to continue bringing the latest in technology to our clients.”

Hertzfeld’s design and planning experience includes master planning for industrial, commercial, and residential developments. He is involved in all aspects of the process including client communication and coordination; site analysis and inventory; conceptual design; hardscape; planting plans; furnishing and lighting layouts; presentation graphics; and construction drawings and details. His strong graphic skills include hand and digital renderings as well as 3D modeling. He also has experience with construction management and subcontractor coordination.

Hertzfeld joined Davis & Floyd in 2015. He received his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree from Clemson University in 2008.

During the American Council of Engineering Companies of South Carolina (ACEC-SC) Engineering Excellence Awards gala, Davis & Floyd, Inc. was named an ACEC Finalist and received an Engineering Excellence Award for their work on the S-31 (York Street) bridge replacement in Aiken, South Carolina.

After completing a routine bridge inspection, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) found that S-31 (York Street) northbound and southbound bridges over Norfolk Southern Railroad were structurally deficient and needed to be closed immediately. SCDOT asked Davis & Floyd to design a replacement bridge on an accelerated schedule. The design was completed in under four months and construction of the two bridges took less than a year. These are the first wooden deck bridges designed for SCDOT.

Engineering Excellence Award entries are given in 12 project categories. A distinguished panel of judges ranks the projects from throughout the state based on uniqueness and innovative applications; future value to the engineering profession; perception by the public; social, economic, and sustainable development considerations; complexity; and successful fulfillment of client/owner’s needs, including schedule and budget.

The team was recognized at ACEC-SC’s annual Engineering Excellence Awards gala at the Columbia Museum of Art on Feb. 6.
